Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the disjointed nature of our times, his most recent works ("The Quartet" is a good example) have been characterized as much by his personal beliefs and opinions as they have by his research. I say this not as criticism -- for I tend to share many of his opinions -- but as a simple statement of how I see his most recent work.I found this to be a marvelous introduction to the four founders he presents: Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Washington.

Ellis takes four major issues in contemporary American life (race, equality, law, and foreign relations) and selects a particular Founding Father (Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Washington) to address that particular issue, showing how it influenced and affected the Founder's lifAs brilliant a book as I have read in some time!

The award-winning author of Founding Brothers and The Quartetnow gives us a deeply insightful examination of the relevance of the views of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Adams to some of the most divisive issues in America today. As always, Ellis writes clearly and persuasively.
