Mud and sludge came racing down the canyons in the dead of night, destroying houses, starting a gas fire, and killing more than 20 people. Difficult. From its pine-crested start atop Figueroa Mountain to its end at Davy Brown Camp, Fir Canyon is filled with lush vegetation, cascading pools and, of course, tall firs trees—these ones called big cone spruce. From here, there are no more junctions to worry about until the turnoff just below the summit. Start early and hopefully you'll get cloud cover because there's not a lot of shade throughout. After the second creek crossing stay to the right, there are two other trails to the left, don't go on those. It was hot. The trail above Cold Springs Loop travels uphill beneath the hike’s last shady canopy, reaching a dirt service road after another 0.35 miles. Once you cross under the power lines, take that trail. Go left onto the West Canyon Trail to begin hiking back towards the parking lot areas. Montecito Peak Trail is a 7.6 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Santa Barbara, California that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. Take this route on the hike down to add a partial loop to the trek, cutting the total round trip distance to Montecito Peak from 7.4 miles down to 7.1 miles. The trail up the west fork of Buena Vista Canyon climbs 225 feet to a saddle that separates it from San Ysidro Canyon. After another 0.2 miles, the trail crosses the creek again (farther upstream), coming to a junction on the other side. This is a physically demanding and rocky hike with lots of loose dirt. Things to bring: hats, bug spray, wear sunblock, lots of water, snacks, and I highly recommend to wear hiking boots.
