This book is one of the biggest surprises for me of the year. I don't read many good books with a first person POV but I've never read a book when that POV is an imaginary friend.

However, if I was an only child, I would have wanted a friend like Budo.

Budo watches over Max but being imaginary, cannot make his presence felt in the real world. At night when Max is asleep, Budo often sneaks off to the gas station because he is bored.

I did let it go since it's just a story. In telling the story of a very difficult period in Max's life, Budo touches on much bigger subjects--friendship, mortality, and especially heroism, both the extraordinary and the everyday kind.
