I'm so used to having heavy bikes (setting aside, of course, my road bike) that it almost felt foreign to be able to so easily carry and move the bike.

Another problem is that the brake bridge is so low that mounting a fender with a 32mm tire (Compass Stampede) is just about impossible forcing me to go to a much less satisfactory 28mm tire. Overall, this is a great frame. Outfitted with Super Everwear tires, Mini front and Deco rear racks, Sparrow townie handlebars, Shotwell stem, Doublerow threadless headset, Hellyer track crankset, and Raindog fenders all from Soma. Excellent geometry. The Soma "ES" frame builds into a very comfortable, mile-eating bike. For the price of the Smoothie ES, I'm not as concerned about taking it out in bad conditions and enjoying the ride. They were very close but some additional work was a good investment. It is a better choice for recreational riders who have no plans on racing. This bike is fabulously stable on fast descents and is designed to be adapted to a wide variety of conditions. I planned to use the bike as my Rando, dirt road explorer, and everyday workhorse. The price is very reasonable. Everything works with regard to the fundamental bike functions.I bought this frame to use for both training and endurance rides. Great for folks who are going to have one bike.I bought this bike fully built up - it was the last floor model for 2006, and I'm really enjoying it.I got to take it for a two hour test drive and found the steel provides a nice smooth ride and the more relaxed geometry is great. I really liked the finish, it exceeded my expectations for the price point. Great for anyone looking for an all-arounder, long distance bike, credit card tourer, etc. Both are steel, light, shock absorbing, long wheelbase and comfortable. Consequently it was necessary to purchase some center-pull brakes (Gran Compe 610s) to gain access to the left boss and even then attaching a rack is hard. I'm 6'5" tall. It’s really a great frame. I used it daily for around 20 months in tropical Hawaii with no rust issues. Needs rear fender brackets (by bottom bracket).

Riding a full on race bike like my Serotta Legend Ti is great when I’m in terrific shape and want to go out for a hard charging 20-60 miler, but as I get older, aggressive riding is less frequent. Slightly extended head tube allows bars to match seat height without looking goofy. Comes without fork for more options. I wanted a Randonnuering design for long distance comfort, a bike I could ride in the spring when my lack of fitness limits enjoyment of an aggressive racing position. First, it projects quite a distance above the 170mm head tube, longer than the available carbon forks, which yields a distinctly head up riding position which is easy on my neck and back.
It is delivered in near ready condition though I took it to a bike shop to have the head tube and bottom bracket checked for proper tolerances. I picked out Soma’s Smoothie ES, as opposed to the Smoothie model for two reasons: I wanted to be able to fit bigger tires and the geometry fit me better. My most dominant impression so far is that it is extremely comfortable for something so aggressive and speedy. I use a l20mm stem to get the 'bar out there at sufficient distance. It rode great.
I've set it up with a Shimano triple crankarm set. I've done multiple centuries and one double-century and survived. Those two feel Cadillac-y; a bit heavy, but solid, smooth, and great fun to ride. I really like the relaxed geometry and longer wheelbase. Drop outs could be better constructed but, so far, no problem.I saw a SOMA Smoothie Frame at Bicycle Outfitters in Los Altos and thought it was one of the nicest looking frames I'd seen. It comes in a beautiful Pacific Blue. It is comfortable but with a stable bottom bracket. Handles a wide variety of tires, racks, panniers, fenders. This is my third bicycle and it’s a great addition to my collection. With $800 being my limit for a frame and fork, I've narrowed it down to the Soma Smoothie and the All-City Mr. It's a different kind of comfortable than say the Surly Cross-Check or the Rivendell Sam Hillborne.
